“Yes, Lily! I do remember them quite clearly… my predecessor had me list all the expenses! 10 pages or more, every time! How could I ever forget about that?!”, Richard said, shaking his bald head.
“And I remember the laughter and the bliss in the people’s eyes, Richie… the fireworks lighting up the skies… lovers kissing as the sun sets… sparkling dresses and sparkling drinks…”, Lyanne giggled and stared romantically into space.
“I can imagine that!”, Richard claimed, nodding, but you could see his slightly disappointed expression. On most occasions, he didn’t join the parties. He was the one working behind the scenes to make them happen. Lyanne was too much of a dreamer to understand how much sweat and brain-wrecking effort it took to feed (=finance) these beasts! “Well, perhaps we could postpone the festivities until we collect the next share of taxes and…”
“But her Majesty’s ascension is NOW… people might lose interest if we wait too long!”, Lyanne pointed out, now turning around to face the Queen. “Crystalline, my dear Angel Elven Queen, what are your thoughts on the matter?”
Crystalline laughed. “Thank you, Lyanne, for your contribution and your brilliant ideas! I do love the thought of celebrating my ascension… however, I also hear Richard’s valid concerns about the financial aspect and in my opinion, we do have the time to wait for the next tax income before we start investing into a proper party!”
“Thank you, Your Majesty!”, Richard said with a relieved sigh, demonstratively wiping his brow, smiling. “I really hoped you would understand!”
Lyanne shrugged and showed her approval by rubbing her hands in anticipation and confirming: “A good decision, Crystalline. At least the people have something to look forward to, then! I will gladly advertise the upcoming festivities! I am sure we have the funds for THAT, don’t we, Richard?”
“Uh.. yes… I suppose we do…”, the Master of Treasures stated, looking a bit deflated. Oooff, the next five pages I will have to write. Hopefully, we break even with the next tally of taxes!
“Amazing!”, Lyanne and Crystalline beamed with gratitude. “One more thing, my Queen: there will be a coronation speech next Sunday! Make sure that you prepare yourself well for this wonderful opportunity to bless the public with your presence!”
“I will. Thank you for the reminder, Lady Lyanne!”, Crystalline slightly bowed her head. “Now let us continue directly with your realm, dear Master of Treasures: how IS the financial situation at the moment?”
“Our economy is doing fine on its own. Only our human trading partners are not as reliable as they should be.” Richard scratched his head and searched for the corresponding pages in his accounting books.
