In the ward office Sister Marsha maintained her professionalism by stifling her anger at Matron McNally. She couldn’t help but slam the door shut. What should have been a positive experience for her patients had yet again turned into an embarrassing charade. The time had come to speak out, to retaliate. “I would appreciate it if you would be respectful whilst on my ward and discuss your issues away from our patients. You have needlessly upset us all today”, Marsha said, then continuing, “ Last month you caused me dreadful embarrassment when the Pets As Therapy dogs were visiting. It had all been properly agreed, a policy was written and approved so we could even have monkeys and goats on the premises if need be, and you ordered them off the ward. You called those dogs scruffy little beasts. They are NOT scruffy little beasts, they were washed and groomed prior to the visit. They are very well behaved, they cheer my patients up and have a calming effect on them. I'm sick of your interference and I’m reporting you to the Head of Nursing. Now get off my ward!!”

“I’m only doing my job!” exclaimed Matron McNally, “and you will find I have the full support of the senior management team!” That was the end of their noxious exchange. There had been a string of misdemeanors over the last few weeks which Sister Marsha had not been brave enough to address. Now she was crying tears of frustration and shaking with temper. This could not continue any longer, it was time to take action. In the ward office Sister Marsha maintained her professionalism by stifling her anger at Matron McNally.
