He came to ask a specific question, supported by a beautiful ring safely hidden inside a small casket tucked into his trouser pocket. She came to end the misery they constantly put each other through, supported by neatly written break-up speech cards to not forget a single thing in case she'd stumble over the words.
He was down on both of his knees, the ring in-between his shaky hands. His knuckles were turning white and his lips were tightly pressed together. She was frozen. There were so many possibilities on how this night could have turned out. This was not the outcome she had expected. Now, she was forced to break someone's heart she deeply cared about. Twice.
"Please," he begged.
"I can't," she whispered. Tears were threatening to spill over as she responded. Her voice nearly cracked. "I can't do this anymore."
She ran. Not once did she look back. It felt like all the air had been sucked out of the room. His friends looked mad, his sister seemed surprised. His mother, however, was unfazed. There was only a knowing glint in her eyes.
She had been expecting something like this to happen and had been warning him about it for weeks. He knew he would never get her approval. Not that it mattered anymore. His love had left him. For good this time.
