Shopping usually entails me being in my pram, while Lolo and Papa take their time looking at stuff. As such, I know that a pram is incredible for stashing things. The part around my legs is completely covered, and I’ve made it a habit to drop my shoes/socks/pacifier/toys into it. No reason in particular. The thing is, sometimes I drop in other things too. Like this one time, I was out grocery shopping with Lolo, when she stopped near an aisle of pickles. I stretched out my arms, grabbed a small glass jar and dropped it into my pram. Lolo didn’t even realise it until much later at night, when we were already back home. `Pickles?! We don’t even eat pickles!’ She exclaimed. Another time we were at a home furnishing store and yet again, I saw my chance and grabbed something. This time Lolo and Papa discovered a wooden carved camel at the bottom of the pram. ‘Zayn!! What are we going to do about you?’ My most expensive heist to date was, however, in Rome. We were there on a holiday and Lolo and Papa thought it’d be fun to check out sunglasses for me. So we made our way into a store with a very sweet lady. Sweet Lady was all smiles and helped me try out many pairs. I would try one on, beam at everyone for a nanosecond and take them off. Papa begged me to keep the shades on for a bit longer, so they could see if it looked nice. But I wasn’t in a mood to obey. Eventually, they lost interest in me and Lolo started trying on glasses. Nothing caught her heart though and, thanking Sweet Lady for her time, we left the store. We had dinner reservations at a restaurant and we were headed that way. After about 20 minutes, Lolo asked me if I’d like my pacifier. Yes, please!, I nodded. She bent down and came back up with a white face. ‘What’s this?’ She asked Papa. In her hands she held a smart looking pair of baby Ray Ban shades. Papa gulped. They looked at the price tag. €80. Double gulp. Both of them glared at me in the light of the setting sun. ‘The store must have closed by now, and we need to leave tomorrow morning!’ Papa wailed. Lolo quickly checked on her phone and realised that the store was in fact open! Hallelujah! So Papa half walked, half ran to return the sunglasses, while Lolo and I waited. On his return, Papa told us that Sweet Lady hadn’t even noticed the shades were missing in the first place. Go figure. It is funny how no one has ever noticed this. If you ask me, thieves should consider using a pram as their modus operandi. It’s also pretty handy for destruction. Like this one time when we were in a souvenir store in Antalya. Lolo and Papa were very busy admiring all the different things in the shop – the light bouncing off glass lanterns of a million different colours, ornate-looking coffee cups and silver trays, row upon row of hand painted plates and pottery, posters and paintings of famous landmarks. While Papa was chatting with the shop owner, Lolo roamed around oblivious to the fact that the aisle was getting narrower with every step. I causally stretched my arms out and touched a plate. One swift pull was all it took. A stack of plates went crashing to the floor. The noise scared everyone and Lolo went as red as a beet. ‘We’re SO sorry!!’ she said apologetically, gathering the now chipped plates and shot me a furious glance. Thankfully for me, the shopkeeper was a jolly person and brushed aside our concerns, saying no harm had been done. Nevertheless, Lolo took me outside before I could break more stuff. Gee!
