Beats of Heart: Purpose in Life

As an incoming college student, my parents have been pressuring me to decide which course to take and my plans in the future. For the past two months, after conducting research and self-realizations, I learned that achieving your dreams is not just about gaining knowledge, profession and title after graduating. But the real purpose of life is what your heart beats and bleeds for.

“What’s your goal in life, Kio?” My mom asked after wiping the tables.

“Perhaps, to serve the other people with heart.” I answered while wiping the floor with the map.

“But, you said back then that you wanted to be a doctor, right?” She asked with a face of curiosity.

“Yes but I realized that helping other people is not based on the amount of money you have and your profession in life. But it is all about your desire to help them with heart, whether you’re a doctor, a farmer or a garbage collector.” I responded with a sweet glance.

“What an admirable answer, my son!” Her response and gave me a tight hug.

“But helping other people doesn’t make you rich, my dear son. Meaning to say, you still need to find a job by choosing the best course you really want in college.” She added with sarcasm.

“Yes, Mom. I get it. And I made up my decision, I will enter medical school by using Psychology as my pre-med course. How about that?” 

“Oh, that’s cool!”

Helping other people is not about the quantity and quality that you can offer, but it’s the purity of your heart and empathy to help uplift the lives of others with kindness. Together, as we put all our efforts as one working team, our micro steps will have a macro effect on the lives of other people and to the future.
