BEING PRESENT

Story

Being present, I think, is one of the biggest tasks humans have to learn in their lives. How often are we in thoughts elsewhere but not in that current moment? So, let’s talk about being present.

What does being present even mean? It means to be with your whole being (mentally, emotionally, physically) in every moment at any given time. To soak everything in that is part of that moment. I know it is kind of unrealistic to be present at every single moment of your life. Sometimes there are circumstances we want to escape because it is too painful, etc. That is being human, too, and okay. But the effort of being present in almost every moment of your life is vital for us humans.

Being present to me looks like visiting the art museum, admiring the ancient paintings on the wall, acknowledging the incredible gifts of the artists. Or walking through the woods, watching the sun peeking through the branches, and finding fruits covered in snow. Being grateful to actually BE in that moment. To feel the sun on your skin, hear the birds sing, to look at a beautiful painting, to listen to music, to work out and feeling the blood pumping through your veins…that is being present, my loves.

What can you do to be more present, you might ask?

Take deep and conscious breaths. Sounds random, but our breath is one of our most powerful tools! It calms our nervous system and connects us with our body and soul. Just take a few deep breaths, right now. Deep in…and out. Do this at least 3 times. Feel your body, feel the breath move your lungs, chest, and belly. Come back into your body and, therefore, into the present moment.

Practice gratitude. When you are in bed, cozy under your blanket, let the day go…start thanking whatever you are grateful for. Thank your body, your warm bed, pet, partner, food, clean water, etc. Feel gratitude flow through your body like a golden river from head to toe. I promise you, you will sleep much better.

Come back to your body. Most of us don’t realize how often we separate from our bodies. We sometimes disconnect in order to protect ourselves, to stop feeling so much. But it is time to come back to yourself, my love. Start talking with your body, apologize for abandoning it, thank it, and say: “I consciously connect back with my body. I am fully present in it now. I call back all scattered parts of me in love and peace. I am whole again.”

Your body will start to feel warmer, calmer, and anchored. Maybe parts of you start tingling. Just breathe and feel how you come back into your body.

Try it, my dear. Connect with your body, call back all your scattered energy, and thank your body for being there for you and keeping you safe. Without our bodies, we wouldn’t experience this human life right now. So, let’s all be grateful for what our bodies do for us every moment, every second of our lives.
