“Did you try limoncello? And pasta? And how was the pizza?” I had just arrived when Ava already bombarded me with a thousand questions. Strangely so far only food-related. It seemed like she had let herself, or rather her outfit, also be inspired by my trip, since she was wearing a T-shirt with a pizza on it and a cap picturing the Colosseum on her head. “I’ve always wanted to try authentic gelato. Please tell me you got gelato and cannoli,” she started again. I shook my head and laughed softly. My short weekend trip to the capital of Italy had been fantastic. I hadn’t planned on going anywhere this summer, but when Ava told me about the travel plans, she had made before the accident and suggested that I should go, I couldn’t think of anything speaking against it. I had enjoyed the Mediterranean vibe, the culture, the art and yes, also the food. Ava had had a tour up the coast in mind with a lot of stops in between vineyards, but I’d always enjoyed city trips more. And the plane ticket prices had also been speaking for Rome. So, I didn’t dwell long on the decision and just did it.

“You know, if someone had told me a few months ago that I’d basically travel around the world, simply because a stranger told me to or rather dared me to… I’d have told them they were nuts.” I smirked. “So how was it?” She beamed at me, impatiently waiting for me to tell her everything about my travels.

“Honestly?”

“Honestly.”

“Sad.” “What?!” If her legs weren’t restricting her movement, I’m sure she would have fallen out of her chair. I sighed but continued, „Sad and lonely. Of course, it was beautiful, and I ate a ton of delicious food and saw truly spectacular art exhibitions. But… I’d have loved it all way more if I had had someone to share all of it with.” Her features relaxed, and she nodded, understanding where I was going with this, but I just went on.

“Don’t get me wrong. Solo travel is great, and I’ve travelled a few times alone already. But… there’s always a point where you feel kind of lonely. Whether it’s if you find out something interesting and would like to turn around and tell someone or when you’re enjoying dinner on your own, watching all others around you share their meals with loved ones.” I cracked a small grin, while she stayed silent. “But, all in all, it was a success.” I declared giving her a bright smile now. “I even brought you a little something!” Her gaze flicked to mine, and her eyes went wide.

“Really?”

“Really.”

“No food, though. Sorry to disappoint.” I chuckled. “It’s a keychain with a wine glass on it. It’s just a little souvenir, not much. I got the same one for myself. I figured you’d like it. You know, since you talked so passionately about visiting the vineyards and told me to try a lot of wine.”

It was probably my imagination, but I could have sworn I saw a tiny tear slip down her cheek then. “I love it.”
