“Are you looking for these?” she asked, a slight quiver in her voice.

“Ah yes, thank you,” I replied. She hesitated for a moment before swiftly turning back and rummaging in her bag.

“Ah, wait!” I interjected. “Before I forget.”

Delving into my bag, I retrieved the book she had dropped earlier and extended it toward her.

“You dropped this at the airport earlier,” I explained.

She quickly bowed her head in gratitude, accepting the book with both hands before promptly turning away.

“Hill, Ryan Hill,” I introduced myself, reaching out my hand. “Nice to meet you.”

She appeared surprised by the gesture. “Chloe Jones,” she responded, her voice tinged with nervousness.

“I wanted to apologize for the way I was earlier. I know it’s no excuse, but I was in a bad mood. I hope you can forgive me,” I stated while shaking her hand. Gosh that sounds cheesy.

A faint smile graced her face, a hint of relief evident. “Oh, thank goodness!” she exclaimed. “I thought you hated me.”

Regaining her composure, she added more quietly, “No, I’m incredibly sorry. I should’ve paid more attention. It’s very nice meeting you.”

Both of us chuckled nervously.

“Water has a funny way of breaking the ice, I guess,” I quipped without thinking.

She regarded me hesitantly for a brief moment before bursting into laughter.
