Story
Vienn / Austria 2022

My hardworking colleague started working again from October 2021 on. Unfortunately a mistake, as it soon turned out. Two weeks later he felt ill again and the doctor ordered sick leave. An amicable solution was later found with the company. Ultimately good for him. Before the end of the year I called him and he was happy to tell me that he had found a good job in a smaller company with a nice boss.

The company was looking again… An accountant was found who could start in January 2022. My contract was extended from November to the end of January.

The new colleague brought a lot of motivation and knowledge with her. I was only an old accountant with a lot of experience, but without a balance accountant exam. So our finance team had new hope. January was an intense training period. The new colleague seemed to understand everything well and also contributed her ideas. At the end of January I said goodbye once again, believing that this time everything will be fine.

Strange but true. On March 31, 2022, who called me? My old finance manager. The colleague had resigned on the last day of the 3-month probationary period. Too much overtime, too much stress. Question to myself: Would I train a student for 3 months who had just finished his studio and had been working part-time in finance for a year during his studies. So he was young, motivated and liked being part of the finance team. A big advantage.

It occurred to me that I had learned when I was young that sometimes it’s good to just say “no”. I asked myself: Is this company building bad karma? However, I couldn’t manage to say “no”.

What followed, how could it be otherwise, three months of intensive work-up and training. The training with the young colleague was quite constructive. He was eager to learn and a good worker.

In the last working week, at the end of June, after a 2-year Corona break, there was another one-day company trip to the Vienna Woods, ending in a wine tavern. I saw this trip as a nice replacement for the farewell party that had been planned since 2020 and never took place. Then again farewell to my colleagues. Some joke and say, ‘Who knows for how long? Until next time!”

So far I don’t have any alarm message and I hope everyone is doing well!
