It was a foggy Saturday morning. Typical for Ireland. Miss Kelly woke up earlier than usual. She had recently had strange nightmares about wicked banshees and mischievous pixies. But worst of all were the nightmares about a headless horseman, who always appeared on a horse that was as black as the night and whose eyes glowed red with fury. The horseman would let out a spine-chilling cackle and put his head on, which he mostly held in his hand and croaked: “Ya be warned, Kelly! If ya entah Blarney Castle, ya won’t return!” And with that, he’d disappear into thin air.
“Oh my, what a dream! Again, about the horseman. How odd!” she said. Ms Kelly decided to take a long and quiet walk by the Cliffs of Moher. The young lady was 24 years old and lived in a cosy, but a quite lonely-looking cottage, close to her favourite place in Ireland: the Cliffs of Moher. Ms Kelly was a smart woman with good taste and excellent manners. Sadly, she didn’t have many friends. But, at least she had close and supportive ones. One of them was Mr Walsh, a really good and honest man, who was against her living there alone. Ms Kelly had natural red hair and chestnut-coloured eyes. She always had a concerned look on her face. Indeed, she was a poor restless soul, tortured by devilish nightmares.
The fog seemed to be quite mysterious that morning. Ms Kelly started to think about her nightmares and about the horseman’s words in particular. What did he mean? Was he trying to manipulate her? No, no one can manipulate Mary Kelly! She was very brave but afraid too. “You can’t just have nightmares all the time!” Mary was desperate to get to the bottom of it and end the tyranny of her nightmares once and for all.
She took one last look at the gorgeous view from the cliffs and then ran back to her cottage. The fog started to get thicker with Ms Kelly’s every breath. It looked as if the fog was made of thousands of ghosts that attempted to stop Mary by blocking her view. “Just… a bit… more… left!” panted Mary, as she started to see her home, when suddenly she heard a voice.
“Listen to us, child. Do not be afraid of us. Don’t do it, we beg you! We know what you are up to. You have to believe us!” hollered a female voice, “ We were like you once… But he took our lives and now we are no longer free…”. “Now we warn the chosen ones. The chosen victims!” added another voice.
“What do you want from me? Who are you even?” inquired Ms Kelly. “We are the ones who fell for his lies, the ones who were fooled by death and paid for it with their lives! You are the next one, Mary Kelly! We give you a chance to avoid the mistake that we made. Don’t go to Blarney Castle! We warned you, now decide what to do next, for now, your life is on the line!” thundered the voices in chorus. “My… life?” whispered Mary. But there was no reply.
