There once was a girl I met at the hospital. Her skin was pale, but her hair was darker than the night. Her clothes were well-chosen and honestly, she looked like a song that you play in the car while driving through the night with nothing but an empty heart in your chest and the moon in the sky. The song you cry to in your bathroom. The song you know all the lyrics to. And if the world was ending she would keep you company and make you laugh like it was your birthday.
Oh, she adored birthdays. She celebrated each of her friend’s special day like it was her own. But it wasn’t. My girl hated her own birthday and cried every year… Please don’t ask her why, or she might try to think of an answer and she won’t find one. So you will end up making her sad… and I don’t want that.
No person on this planet could ever understand how proud I am that she stayed. I want to give her love and affection, since her family is struggling to give it to her. She is my breathless moment.
One late evening I picked her up with my car, so we could escape reality once again. Tonight I want to take her pain away, I want to take her grief away. She tells me that we will remember tonight for the rest of our lives. I know that her heart is talking to me.
I know God, you wanted me to protect her precious little heart. So I did, I did protect her little heart. All I want is to see every single star explode in her eyes the moment I tell her how I feel. All I want is to hold her small hands to be sure, that this is real. And I did hold them, and I protected her heart, God. When I look at her, all I see is an angel.
“I will tell you about the stars and the moon”, she whispers as I start the car.
“And I will tell you about eternity”, I respond, thinking about the red roses in the backseat and the ring in my pocket.
I always loved to look at her. My gaze was caught up on her all the time.
I took way too long to look at her.
She looked as beautiful and breathtaking as ever.
Way too long.
There
once
was
a girl.
I met her at the hospital.
Her skin was pale.
But her hair was darker than the night.
