The knocking at the door continued. Something had to be very urgent.
Slowly the old man walked over and opened the door a few centimeters.
Outside stood a pale woman in her thirties. She looked at him with a concerned expression.
“Ethan where have you been?! I’ve been looking all over for you!”
Ethan didn’t answer at first. A lot of thoughts rushed through his head simultaneously.
He was glad to finally know his real first name. Well, at least if he hadn’t given this lady a fake one as well.
But who was the lady anyway? She acted in a very familiar fashion, a bit too familiar, maybe.
“Why aren’t you answering me? Are you deaf?!” she barked at him.
He wanted to answer something, but she was faster.
“Ok not important. What I really wanted to do is warn you. Some strange men showed up at the place a while ago. Dressed completely in black. What’s up with that? They went past my flat and straight up to your door. Then they knocked several times. But you didn’t answer, so they left.”
She looked at him concerned, but excited at the same time.
The detective scratched his head. Apparently she was his neighbor. Seemed nice enough. Easy on the eyes.
But the visit of the men in black seemed concerning. Why did they visit him? They didn’t sound like normal clients to him.
Politely he nodded.
“Thank you for the information, but there is nothing to worry about. They were clients. It’s fine.” he lied.
Relief spread over her kind face.
“Ok good, that means you’re safe. I wouldn’t want anything bad to happen to you.”
She pulled him in for a long kiss, and then they exchanged some more pleasantries. Afterward she rushed down the stairs, giggling to herself.
Ethan blushed. Maybe they were more than neighbors after all.
But there was no time to dwell on romantics. He quickly closed the door and walked to the window to peer outside.
There! A man dressed completely in black stood on the road and watched the street carefully. The detective quickly drew the curtains.
Someone was looking for him.
