Selene was sitting under a birch tree, looking out over the vast expanse, when her brother Poseidon appeared next to her, foaming and thundering as if he were a tidal wave crashing on the shore.
“They are impossible”, he yelled. “Senseless wars, corruption, hatred. What is the purpose of humans other than to be as miserable as possible?”
Selene shifted her gaze to look at him. “Dear Brother”, she said. “What happened to make you feel this way? I thought you agreed with me that the human creation is a work of art and that humans have the potential to do great things.”
“I spent some time amongst humans and realized that we were utterly wrong”, Poseidon answered.
Selene smiled softly at him, a warm glow radiating from her. “I know that it is sometimes hard to believe that humans are magical beings, but when you look at individual people, at individual stories, you would agree with me. A woman working three jobs to provide for her family but still never losing the smile on her face. A young boy regularly going grocery shopping for an old man, not accepting any compensation other than a mere thanks. A nurse spending almost every single day at the hospital because she knows that people need help and she loves to help. Two people who had a fight apologizing to each other because they know that they love each other too much to stay angry.
You see, dear Brother, that there are many people out there who are truly good, pure souls and they deserve to live long, happy lives and get what they dreamed of. And of course there are dark, tainted souls, but you cannot judge an entire population based on a few exceptions. I love everything that we created and I know that in time, you will see that again too.”
Poseidon paused to think for a moment, and then sat down next to Selene. “How do you do it, Sister?”, he asked, thoughts seemingly a million miles away. “How do you have such faith in them when they often don’t seem to have faith in themselves? The humans live in a time of abrupt change and a myriad of struggles right now and seem to be struck by one crisis after the other. So how do you still have such faith in them?”
“Because I know that they are worth my faith”, Selene answered with calm confidence. “I believe in them. I believe that they will make it out of these stormy times, stronger and more loving that ever. I believe that humans are capable of improving themselves, of learning and adapting. Because that’s what the whole human race is based upon. Adaption. So I trust them, and I believe in them, and I love them.”
A small smile crept across Poseidon’s face, gone so fast that you could have imagined it. “How lucky the humans are to have someone like you in their corner, Sister. So lucky, and they will never know it.”
