Story

I left the closet door slightly open so she wouldn’t get suspicious. My hands were shaking and I was sweating cold. I could feel the cardiac mass, elastic, pulsing in her throat as if my heart would come out of my mouth. My ears were in alert for any movement in the room. My legs were ready to run even though I felt like I was going to faint at any time.

My body felt her presence before she arrived. I looked through the crack of the closet door, she had entered the room, still humming the lullaby in a soft voice. The hairs of my arms bristled as the song chilled the blood in my veins. The moonlight reflected on the garden blade that she carried in her hand, already stained with blood. Her face was covered by a baby mask was a raw, hellish sight.

I wanted to cry but I was afraid she would hear me, my stomach was hurting and burning. She Started circle the room humming “Siiiillvaaaaaaaaaaa… I know you are in the house” she tune her voice to sound like a child. “Where is the baby?” I feel a hot liquid dripping down my legs. I piss myself. That ridiculous child’s voice… My legs were shaking, I wasn’t so sure if I could run if I needed to.

She started to hummed the lullaby again and walked out of the room, dragging the blade through the walls. For the first time I was able to breathe in that closet. Which had a funny smell, sweetness mixed with rust, infested the air.

“He abandoned me, Silva” She sang outside the room. “When I said that I was pregnant. He abandoned me and ran away.” I tried to hide further inside the cabinet. “Where is baby?” she asked looking behind the furniture of the living room. “You know, Silva, I took the baby out. So that we could get back together. And you know what he did, Silva?” She asked coming back to her room, with the blade hanging in her hand. “HE MARRIED YOU” She threw herself on the mattress and began , punching and kicking the pillow.

In the distance, the police siren was already audible. Relief washed over me, I would survive. I looked up in silent gratitude, when my eyes focused in the dark. The finger had been ripped off, along the ring that matches mine. His face was only partially visible, but I could still identify my husband. My vision failed and once again I thought I was going to pass out.

A scream formed in my mouth, but I swallowed back the sound that could have been the death of me. “Where is the baby?” She asked, dragging herself off the bed. On the first floor I heard the police breaking down the front door, shouting confused words.
She slowly walked towards me. That’s when I realized, she knew that I was there. She was playing me! “Where is the babyyyyyyy?!” She yelled standing in front of the closet door. Steps rushed up the stairs, shouting. She opened the closet door and looked at me, eyes flashing behind the mask, “Found Ya”!
