I woke up in a warm bed and for a short moment everything was fine, while the setting sun was tickling my nose. Until the crippling feeling of anxiety climbed up my spine and I shot up from my sleeping position, hastily throwing off the blanket. Alarmed, Sharmi sat up in the chair, while Lilly shuffled at the end of the bed.
“Are you ok?”, Sharmi asked concerned. My hand shot up to my cheek that was burning in pain. I couldn´t hold back and just started crying out all the tears bottled up in my eyes. I lunged at Lilly and tightly held her.
“I will not let them take you! I will kill him, I will kill them all, if they just touch you!”, my voice was rough, barely squeaking. Lilly just smiled tired. “Do you know why I don´t talk to my best friend anymore?” she asked.
Lilly came from a small city in Iraq and moved here 5 years ago, going through the process of learning the language and redoing her medical degree. I shook my head.
“She was killed by a drone.”, she stated, looking into the distance. “I have lived through the worst. I will live through this.” Tears shot up my eyes. This was not a book or a novel, this was deadly, dangerous, stupid and there was nothing I could do. I immersed myself into a world that committed atrocious crimes just for the fun of it.
“What if he kills you.” I asked in a small voice, even though I knew there could be even worse outcomes. What if he… sells her? “We will think of something. A way of communication, tracking.” Sharmi said, determined, and so we stayed up for hours staring holes into the walls and just thinking about how we could keep Lilly as safe as possible.
I couldn’t breathe or think. It was getting hotter and hotter by the minute and all I wanted was to escape. “We should call the police.” Sharmi broke the hour long silence. “But would we be safe than?”, I asked. “How longwould we be safe? Would our families be safe?”, Lilly also added. Again silence engulfed us.
“We would we just be pawns, so they can catch them?” I added. We all knew horror stories from police departments and also we have never personally been involved with them.
“I will go”, Lilly said. Horror spread over Sharmis face. “You will absolutely not!”, she screamed out but was only met with Lillys stern expression. “We don´t have any other chance. It´s me or you all, don´t you get it!” She stormed out of the room. We shared a small glance at eachother, before we chased after her.
“Are you sure?”, I asked Lilly in a small voice, the guilt still eating away at me. Sharmi shook her head in unbelieve. “I will survive”, Lillly said while reaching for my hands. I squinted my eyes close to hold back the tears.
She grabbed her keys and booked at us with an expression of doom, sadness and certainty. “Lets get a GPS tracker.”
