Lessons of the Ordinary

Story

Appreciation.

They’ve taught me to appreciate the moments we don’t often take the time to appreciate. They’ve taught me that embracing the ordinary is an extraordinary feat in itself. Through these fictional tales and real-life narratives, I’ve learnt that significance is often found not in the grand accomplishments, but in the quiet moments of self-discovery and personal growth.

Those quiet moments of contentment, the absence of stress, and the uneventful yet meaningful instances of simply living. When we watch, read, and listen, let’s not only appreciate the incredible talent of these creatives but let’s focus on what those characters are saying and doing. The whispered conversations, fleeting glances, and routine actions all reflect the subtleties of the human experience.

Look beyond the glamorised moments of perfect montages and eloquently matched music, they’re all saying something important.

My first example of appreciating the ordinary; Call the Midwife. This series that beautifully captures human experiences, raw emotions, and interconnected stories, reminds us that even the smallest contributions of generosity and compassion make a big difference.

From the joys, sorrows, triumphs, and struggles of humankind, this epitome of authentic and heartfelt storytelling is filled with all those wonderful, beautiful, ordinary moments.

My favourite quote; ‘When we look back in time, what we remember best is the sweet-repeated patterns of our ordinary lives or days that sparkled with the sheen of something different. News, a treat, an invitation. The answer may not matter, sometime the simple gift of memory is all’

A reflection on the nature of memory and the essence of what truly matters in our lives; to find joy in both the steady rhythms and the occasional sparks.
