Living For Free – Part 4

Story

Then I went to Lucs’ caravan. He had already invited me at the beginning of July to spend the month of August there. A man who saw me passing by asked me if he could take me somewhere, and since the sun was already setting, I gratefully accepted. He also showed me the public water tap, which I had not yet found, and I filled up the five-liter bottle I had brought. That would last for a while. As I was resting in the caravan at dusk, looking up at the mountains, I heard a sound from the bushes behind me that made me want to crawl into the caravan. A small grasshopper or cricket or something flew past me in the caravan and I wondered how I would spend the night with it being inside the vehicle. Luckily, it jumped onto the bed, and it was easy to catch and carry it out.

The next morning, the food I had brought with me had been rummaged through and eaten, including my delicious olive bread! At noon, when Luc and Thierry dropped by, I found out who had done it: There were three dogs on the neighbouring property. “When I first came here, my rubbish got rummaged through every night, even if there was nothing in it. And it only happened after I went to bed, even if it was two o’clock in the morning. Once, I stayed awake and waited in the trailer. Then I saw it was a dog. I chased it away with a broom. “There were also stories about the “brunette” again.

Thierry told me: “She made sure the police came to Pappy’s house just before you came the first weekend. Luc had a fling with her in the past, but he’s got a girlfriend, and now she’s pissed. She went to the police to drag Luc’s name through the dirt, all because of jealousy. Now she has spread the rumour that I went to someone else’s pool and stole tomatoes (as if I’d ever stolen tomatoes from anyone). There are no tomatoes in the garden anyway. But the guys were really cool and took my side. “She’s jealous of you now,” said Thierry. “She thinks you are Luc’s new lover. She was at Pappy’s until one o’clock last night. And she’s mad at me because I don’t sleep with her.”

I spent exactly two nights alone in the caravan, then I was drawn back to Pappy’s. This time I cleaned the living room and kitchen; I was busy with that for a while. Just when I was going for a walk with one of the few remaining ice-creams, Thierry drove by and took me to the supermarket nearby. We met Luc there, who was there with his girlfriend and therefore only briefly talked to us: “We have to go shopping at another supermarket. But get that rosĂ© wine for Pappy, then I won’t have to stop by his place.”

On my way back, I found expensive noodles in a container, which we immediately prepared. Thierry was usually the cook. He made tomato sauce with olives. It was delicious.
