Caleb: “She is my intern. And I want her to work properly. I couldn’t watch her anymore moving so uncomfortably in those short, tiny clothes.”
Peter raised an eyebrow in question: “Maja, you know you can come to me. I would have sorted that out.”
Caleb: “Yeah, right. You would have gone with her to… the house. By the river?”
Peter didn’t answer that.
Maja: “Wouldn’t you?”
Peter: “No, but I would have gotten you everything you wanted.”
Maja: “But this way it was quicker and better. I got to explain everything to her. To the lady, oh I didn’t catch her name.” They both looked at me in fear. “She was nice to me, don’t worry.” I told Peter, who was still frozen. “What? Oh! Now I see! She is one of your ex-girlfriends!”
Caleb burst out in laughter.
Peter: “Caleb! That’s not funny. And no, she is not my ex-girlfriend.”
Maja: “Oh, sorry. I just figured… .”
Peter: “That every girl you will ever meet here was involved with me?” Now I was frozen. “Why would you think that?!” His head turned to Caleb. “Oh, I really need a break from you.” He said, about to go away. “But this isn’t over!”
Maja: “But you are not going to punish him. I mean, what are you going to do? He is on the gardening team already.” I joked.
Peter: “Right. I think it’s time to remove you from that duty. We really need your expertise back in the camp.”
Maja: “Then I stay here, too?”
Peter: “After the work is finished at the plantation.”
Maja: “That’s ridiculous! I don’t even know how to do that.”
Peter: “I think you do. And I also know a thing or two; I will join you.” Then he stepped out of the conversation and went off.
Maja: “Join me, or observe me? He can’t be serious!” I whispered to Caleb in disbelief.
Caleb: “Just leave it, I crossed a line.”
Maja: “No. That’s not it.” Then I raised my voice: “Peter! You can’t just decide what we have to do! If I wanted someone to be in charge of me, I could have stayed at home, with my mother!”
“HUGH!” I heard everyone breathe, terrified.
Peter turned around and showed me a passionate grin. “Fine. You finish that together. Well, the three of us.” He smiled devilishly. Then he came closer and whispered in my ear: “No one has spoken up to me like that.”
Maja: “Sorry, I just… .”
Peter: “No, no. Don’t apologize.” He said, biting his lip. And then he really went off.
