Once around the world

Story
Carinthia / Austria

… and pockets full of money. That’s how Karel Gott sang in German “Einmal um die ganze Welt”.

A wish that not many people can fulfill. In the summer of 2014 I had the idea of how I could fulfill Julia’s wish with our budget. In Minimundus – the small world at the Wörthersee in Austria.
At the entrance there was a red English phone box. It reminded me to call our daughters in Vienna and tell them, that we were fine.

We admired over 150 fantastic works of art, buildings, constructions, ships and trains from 45 countries recreated on a scale of 1:25. I took a picture with Julia in front of the Statue of Liberty in New York. The White House in Washington D.C. reminded us of the exciting time in the US with our civil wedding in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Mesa Verde, a 1,500-year-old Indian settlement built into a rock face, was also very impressive.
Another photo with Julia in front of the unfinished, beautiful Sagrada Familia Cathedral, with the hope that it will be finished in the near future.

Very close together we see the Great Wall of China and the Taj Mahal. Two constructions with completely different meanings. Great Wall of China, the largest fortification in the world. Taj Mahal, where the most beautiful monument is said to have been built for the love of a woman.

It’s hot, we take a break from our trip around the world and strengthen ourselves at a self-service stand with sausages, fries and ice tea. Then we continue through the unique historical cultures of Europe. So different and yet each one is beautiful in its own way. Of course, I’m also proud to show Julia all the ornate palaces, castles and churches that she didn’t know yet. Reinhard Fendrich song comes to mind: “I’am from Austria.”

We arrive at the Vatican and I want to take a picture with St. Peter’s Basilica. In front of us is a young man who is also taking photos. When he turns around, to our surprise we recognize a former colleague of mine from Vienna. He’s just as surprised. How small the world is! There would be a lot to tell about many other works of art in this world, but then the story would be too long.

We become aware that every culture on every continent has created a lot of beautiful things. Secular, spiritual and technical works. It would be even nicer if all people from these places could respect each other and live together in peace. Much more wonderful things could be created. Tired and happy we end our journey in our hotel in Klagenfurt.
