Well, in this chapter, I’ll tell you some words and things scouts know. ItÂŽll be a little dictionary for the rest of the book to help you to understand my stories.
Knots and ties: You might know a few knots. Maybe one to make one string from two. Or to tie a string around a stick. But what if I tell you that if you show these knots to a scout, he will just laugh? And the reason for that is, because scouts learn a lot of knots for every situation in their life. For example, scouts can build a whole building from wood with just strings. If you have ever been to a scout camp, you may have wondered how there can be cooking stations, small towers and even buildings, nobody knows what they are for. Because there is a knot you can build everything with. And scouts like to show what they can do, so for the whole camp they will build a city from wood. And it’s fun until they have to build it down again. So, if I’m talking about knots and ties, I mean complex, strong ties, nobody can tell how to do them.
Tents: If I mention tents, then don’t think about small, colourful, cute tents, like those you usually go camping with. Think about big, white, heavy tents for 5 or more people. If you enter such a tent, it is like entering a hall. And usually there is chaos all over the tent already on the second day of the camp. A few don’t have a floor either. You just put a trap in it and can look outside, if you lie on the ground and look through the gab between the ground and the tent wall. But that’s okay, it’s actually fun until it’s raining.
Fire: As I told you already, kids learn how to make fire when they are 10 years old. Scouts use fire, for example, to cook. So, on a camp you won’t eat anything until you have made a fire. Which can take a long time if it’s windy.
But scouts also sit around a campfire and sing and play guitar in the evening. ItÂŽs a warming, comfortable feeling, especially after a long day, to sit in a circle and sing songs, you have been singing your whole life. As scouts have a lot of songs, every scout knows and likes to sing, it’s always fun to sing the same songs on repeat.
Jamboree: I already told you about it and you may remember the word. A Jamboree is nothing else than an international camp which takes place every fifth year in a different country. The first Jamboree took place in London, the first after the 2nd WW was in Austria.
At such camps there are thousands of scouts. I’ve never been to a real jamboree, but to a jamboree in Upper Austria. Which is not that big, but an experience as great as the real jamboree. The special thing about it is meeting all the other scouts in the world. You can make new friends, learn something about other cultures and have fun with people from all over the world. I will tell you more about my first jamboree, so please have in mind that I have only been to a jamboree in Upper Austria.
BP’s thoughts for the scouts’ movement: As BP was in so many countries during his military career, it was important to him that scouts respect other cultures. As he didn’t like the reason he was fighting for in the army, it was important to him that scouts live a peaceful life and help each other. As BP had always loved nature, it was important to him that scouts care about nature. He had always wanted a peaceful world and scouts will make that wish true.
