Story
Raxblick / Austria 2013

Prehistory: Is mentioned in “Dreams and Intuitions” and in “Danube Hospital Vienna and I”.
It’s time to write the final act.
After 3 weeks at home with a swollen leg, a nice driver from company Hallermobil took me to the beautiful Raxblick rehabilitation center. There was also very good care and cooking.
I was in a room with a nice view with Karl, a bricklayer. We got along well right away. He had major problems on his right forearm, including his hand, due to heavy work. At meals we sat at a table with Johann, a some overweight office employee. Also a nice guy with the same handicap as me: femoral neck fracture.
On the first day I had a short conversation with the senior doctor. He asked what my personal goal was for this 3 week rehab. Unsuspectingly, I said that I would like to be able to walk again like before the accident. Then a conversation with the psychologist, with the question of whether I suffer from depression. Surprised, I said “no”.
She was happy about it and explained to me that some patients get depressed if they have a prolonged period of pain. The next day, the therapist who did walking exercises with me said that I no longer needed my crutch. He was right. One of the most difficult exercises was walking down stairs. Going up the stairs was easier.
The daily program, except for the weekend, was busy but never stressful.
Exercises in the fitness center in the morning. For me mostly cycling on the home trainer and lifting weights with my legs.
Afternoon group gymnastics and swimming pool. Nordic Walking was planned but never took place because it snowed too much that year. It snowed until Easter when I drove home.
My foot was quite swollen for the first few weeks. Some pleasant lymph gland massages and drinking lots of water solved the problem.
Light electrotherapy helped activate my muscles. In the house there were some PCs for the guests. So I was able to send Julia e-mails in addition to the evening phone calls. We really appreciated that.
Friend Werner from the gospel choir visited me with Julia. Both were indeed surprised at my progress in rehab, which motivated me even more. When Julia saw the gymnastic room, she was a bit jealous. She loved gymnastics. In the evenings there was sometimes entertainment with musicians in the cafeteria. But sometimes one of the patients would come with a guitar and songbooks. We sat at the table and sang happily until 10 o’clock in the night. After that you could watch TV in your room.
One day before departure there was another appointment with the senior doctor. I couldn’t run, but they were happy with my progress. Balance has been checked. I could stand with my right leg alone for about 20 seconds. With the left leg about 30 seconds.

Celebrating Easter at home with Julia and the kids was the best part!
