Rules and Regulations:

Story
Earth

Stealing an apple has it’s price – You get thrown out of paradise. In the early days, it was as simple as this – We can read that in Genesis

Later, it became more complicated – More people became implicated. Law was no longer dependent on a single judge alone – With the Code of Hammurabi, it even became carved in stone

Then again it all has changed, medieval law promised heavenly riches – In the name of Boss Almighty, dignitaries separated the good souls from the witches

At this time, to be thrown into the river was the penalty for almost everything – Lucky was the one who could swim. Another did not make it back to the shore – Triggered an increment on the `guilty` score.

If the perp himself could not be apprehended when a charge was filed – Then simply, clan liability was applied. This time is gone, and only the perp himself is held responsible for what he did – And legions of lawyers push paragraphs to find wordings that best fit

The best way still, as I was taught – Is if you never get caught. As in the story I was once told – By a man who was already very old

He told me he once got almost caught in a traffic control – which luckily turned out harmless for them all. He rode his bicycle at night down the hill – Had in his mind no ill will

When out of the blue a police officer came into sight – The chances to avoid a collision were rather slight. `Stop, your bicycle has got no lamp` the lawman shouts, his eyes growing wider – ‘Me, rapidly approaching, yell back’: `Get lost quickly’
. `I have no brakes either`

The lawmen, suddenly aware he was in serious danger – Took a leap right into the ditch for not becoming knocked down by the stranger. By the time the lawman rose back to his feet – The cyclist was gone, leaving behind a dark and empty street

Picking his notepad he started to write down his report – Starting with a missing lamp, ending with a personal onslaught. ‘Danger for life due to a reckless drive’ – ‘Will end up in sentencing for life’

But then again, failing to stop an otherwise harmless cyclist – What will the public say if he would have encountered a terrorist? He imagined what they would say, all those rules and regulations lover – The tabloids would read ‘Do all our lawman ditch and cover?’

While the lawman realized a missing lamp is not worth it to become part of the roadkill statistics – The old man learned that cycling with no brakes, you follow the law of ballistics. So I think in the end, the regulation about having a lamp on your bicycle at night – Brought both of them a new way to look at life and a deeper insight. Some say that rules and regulations help us to build a society – But reading a law book, some of them rather drive me into insanity
