The Cure is Murder – Chapter 5

“Hmmm. So, you know the ins and outs.”
“It was for 9 months.”
“Hmm. I want to send you in undercover.”
Yikes. Hope no one is here who remembers me from back then.
“People will talk more freely.”
Yikes. But some will remember me from yesterday. Sabrina Neuling. Gertrude Muller. I interrogated those two. I could say that I left the force. That it was too much stress. That I knew all about burnout and didn´t want to go there. I won´t have to do anything.
“I just want you to listen. Listen to everything.”
“Two women. I already interrogated two women.”
“Which ones?”
“The foreign one who was swimming with the corpse.”
“She wasn´t swimming with the corpse.”
“She was in the water with the body.”
“That´s better. Be concise.”
“And her friend.”
“We can have you sent in as a patient. Burnout. It was all getting too much for you, what with your mother. Shows we have a heart. Good PR.”

I wondered where he was taking me. He seemed nice enough. He was very young. This must have been his first case judging by the way his cheeks flushed and then whitened. A bit nervous. Obviously in awe of the dark-haired woman in plain clothes – they did have a designer touch, mind. I notice these things. Beate and Ellie probably went to the same shop, if you know what I mean. She must have been his superior. His boss. She looked like a tough cookie. Evil-looking eyes she had and a dark red down-turned mouth. Poor thing. Probably looked nice when she smiled. But all the women in the government now had that same hard mouth, and did they love their lipstick. Made me think of Cruella de Ville, the comicstrip. When I think that I´d recently met a woman who wanted to write a book on the matriarchy and said how great it would be if women ruled the planet. I couldn’t see that it would be great with women like the Austrian ones now in the government. They even had their own Burschenschafter club, without the swords, of course, but the name said it all: Hysteria. Had things already progressed into the unknown, and they were already picking out those they deemed to be traitors?
