The Forest’s Breeze

Story

Can’t you feel it?

I’m sure you can. It’s been like this since the very beginning. People simply choose to ignore it. But you can trust me, okay? I am just like you. I promise. What do you mean, you don’t know what I’m talking about? Of course, you do. Don’t you remember? I saw you here yesterday. You were here, in the same, endless forest just yesterday. I saw you here. I know what you were doing here. I won’t tell anyone, you can trust me.

You still don’t believe me? Fine, just give me some time to explain. It won’t take long. It pains me to see that you are unwilling to admit something, even though I witnessed it firsthand. I know that you can see it, too. I’ll tell you everything, from the very beginning. I started seeing it not long ago as well. I was walking around the city, looking around and adoring all the tall buildings, and the large amount of people that I was surrounded by. You see, I used to be fascinated by people. But that all changed one day. I was becoming quite tired of seeing the same thing every single day, you know? I knew that I needed a change. So I went over here. This forest here.

I certainly felt it from the very beginning, I just didn’t know what it was. I enjoyed the quiet, gentle breeze, the songs of birds, and the endless length of all the surrounding trees. Then, suddenly, there was complete silence. It was almost as if everything stopped moving all of a sudden. And then, I felt it.

Thump. Thump.

The loud sound echoed through the whole forest. At first, I thought that it was my heartbeat beating rapidly, but I checked and I could no longer feel it. The only thing I could feel was the vibrations of the loud thumping. Whatever it was, it thumped rhythmically, almost like an actual heartbeat. I found that funny at first. But little did I know, I was right. I approached one of the trees and gently touched it. The thumping was suddenly much stronger. I followed the vibrations until I found the source. And then… there it was. It was the forest all along! The forest is alive!

I swept away a few leaves from the big leaf pile and there it was. A large heart. Branches spread throughout the heart, spreading a dark red liquid through the heart that kept it pumping. Then, it spread onto the leaves, and then throughout the whole forest. It kept the forest alive. Just like us, humans. I knew right away that this was something big, something special. And I know that you can see it too, right?

What do you mean you can’t feel it? It’s right there. Can’t you see it?! I’m pointing right at it! How much longer are you planning on ignoring everything? Just how terrible can you be?!

Fine. I was looking for someone to help preserve the forest, but it seems you’re not interested, and I’m disappointed. I’m sorry, you’ve heard too much. But it’s okay, I promise you’ll be put to good use. In fact, the forest’s stomach is grumbling as we speak.
