Story

A day in the Futurium

On 25th of October, we spent a part of the day from our study trip in the Futurium, in the center of Berlin. We first took the tram and then we walked through a part of the government district, which is really important for our daily lives.

The Futurium is a quite new museum about what our future could be. There, everything revolves around climate, living, nutrition and technology, but the big question is “How do we want to live”. The Futurium was first opened in 2019. Today it is open every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. except Tuesday. The visit is free of charge because the Futurium is financed by the Federal Ministry of Research. This makes it open for everybody.

In the entrance area is a shop where you can buy many games, research sets and kits for young and old. There are also sometimes guides. It is best if you find out more on the homepage before visiting.

We went there at 9:30 a.m. Everyone got a digital bracelet with which you could do interactive exercises and save anything you do. We stored our valuable things in a locker.

First we went upstairs to the first floor. It was a very huge room, which was split into different smaller parts. We could do the activities free and in our time. There were two large windows on each of the two opposite sides. So we had a nice view over a part of this huge German city. Then we went through a part of the room where we saw a huge construction made of wood. This showed us the interaction of nature and technique. The craftsman used virtual reality to place the 2,000 wood elements and the 11,500 metal parts. In addition, we saw many ways how nature could be used better. When we walked straight across to the other side of the room it was all about our consumer behaviour. From our nutrition to the use of energy. In the middle of this part of the room was a big swing, but it was always occupied. At the back of the room was an interactive station where you could treat strange diseases. Next to this swing was a stand where you could answer questions about our consumer behaviour.

With our digital bracelet, we could collect information which we want to save for later and in another floor, we were able to put the bracelet in the future machinery. This was a device where you could print a card with access data for the Futurium website where we can see our saved information.

When we entered the stairs, we saw a sign which said “Skywalk”. We were confused because we didn’t know what that was. Therefore, we decided to walk up the stairs. The stairs led to the roof of the Futurium. From there we had a view of the government district, and we saw a part of the CharitĂ©.

We ran out of time very fast because there were so many things to explore. We saw many things, but if you want to explore everything in detail you have to plan in more time. We would say about 3 hours.

We think that the Futurium is a perfect museum for school classes and families.
