Of all the teachers I’ve met, there’s one I will never forget. It wasn’t just because she had the cutest pet—it was because she had something important to say. She always reminded us that we were all smart in different ways. Some of us were quick with numbers, while others had big, creative ideas that took time to understand.
She helped us see that while being smart is great, there’s something even more important that guides us through life. You can be clever and have good ideas, but if you’re mean, people won’t want to listen. Big numbers, fancy clothes, and high scores can seem impressive, but sometimes a kind word, a helping hand, or a friendly smile means so much more.
I remember my teacher, not just because of her adorable puppy, but because of how kind she was to me. I used to struggle with math, and sometimes I cried in class. When I did, she was always there to comfort me and help me feel strong. The way people make us feel sticks with us, and so do the important things they say. That’s why I’ll always remember what my teacher told us:
“Greatness doesn’t take much. You don’t need to speak many languages to be great. It’s wonderful if you do, but it’s not the only way. You don’t have to be talented in everything or get straight A’s. Those things are good, but the highest score in life comes from kindness. Kindness shows how big your heart is. And the great thing about it is that kindness is free. It speaks all languages, in all countries, and it’s for everyone, no matter who they are. Kindness is a superpower that makes other people’s lives—and the world—better.”
As I remembered her words, I imagined kindness as a magic wand, capable of doing amazing things. I even made a little list of how kindness works like magic:
Making someone feel special: We all need to feel special sometimes, and a little kindness can make that happen.
Making someone’s day better: When things aren’t going well, a helping hand can mean the world.
Being someone others want to be around: Who wants to hang out with someone who makes them feel bad?
Making the world a better place: When we go out into the world with kindness, we help create a place where people are more respectful and joyful. I love knowing that wherever I go, someone might greet me with kindness.
Thanks to my teacher, I began using the power of kindness more often. I discovered how my magic wand of kindness could create wonderful things for both me and others.
Challenge: Create your own magic wand (you can go to the park and find a beautiful stick) and write down three kind acts you can do this week. Use your magic wand to show the world how big your heart is!
