I turned to see where the noise was coming from. Who was it? It sounded familiar, but I couldn’t place it. “Laura, is that you? If so, I’m not in the mood for jokes. Please come out.” Silence. “Do you know what kind of people I despise? People who think their problems are the most important thing in the world. No, I tried everything to restrain myself, but I just couldn’t. Do you know how difficult it’s to live in a house with a self-centered person?” Where was that sound coming from? I turned around again and saw no one. It couldn’t be Laura. The voice sounded hoarse and as if an old lady was speaking. “Who’re you and where’s Laura?” “Shh. Let me do the talking. You see, this is what I’ve had to put up with for the last 5 years. I’ve tried to disappear. Believe me, I’ve tried. But I couldn’t.” I know that voice. It couldn’t be. I reached for the nearest object I could find. “Get away from me! Don’t come near me!” I started waving the vase around. “Don’t you think that’s disrespectful to me?” The person started walking towards me. I couldn’t see her face, but I was sure who it was. “It’s a bit disappointing that you’re not happy to see me, darling.” She stepped out of the darkness and I finally saw her face. After five long years. “Ta-da. Aren’t you glad to see your mother?” There’s no way she’s still alive. “Ha, I know what you’re thinking now. ‘How can she still be alive,’ am I right? Her face is priceless.” She was enjoying this. How can she still be alive? She died five years ago. She can’t be alive anymore. I fell on the floor speechless. “WHAT DID YOU DO TO LAURA?” “Honey, she’s dead. She was a distraction. From you. I know you. You enjoy killing. I saw it in your eyes when you tried to kill me five years ago.” “No, you’re not alive. I was defending myself. YOU WERE THE ONE WHO TRIED TO KILL ME!” “Oh sweetie, do you believe that? Stop lying to yourself. I know you enjoy it or you wouldn’t have killed your boss today.” No, how would she know?
