Where is it, where is it, where is it…? slowly panic arose in me!
We – that was my wife and I – had recently entered the clothing store “Macies” in the United States. We had come to a section where some men’s training suits were hanging. At my wife’s encouragement, “look, you need a new tracksuit anyway…”, I walked up to it to try some on.
At that time, I had a backpack on my back with everything you need for traveling but you don’t really like to take for shopping. There were our passports as well as airline tickets, there was my Macbook Pro and iPad, there was daily medication, and of course, there was my wallet with all the credit and ATM cards I own.
How was I going to try on a trainer jacket with a backpack like that on my back? Of course, I placed it on the floor. The mirror for looking at my imposing appearance in the Trainings look was a bit away and so we went there. What I saw pleased me and, of course, also my wife, so we decided to buy the training suit and I looked for my wallet, but oh shock, it was in the backpack and … Now we ran around the racks, crawled under the pants, lifted up the shirts and suits – but it was not to be found anywhere. Everything we had at that time and needed there in the USA was in that backpack. It was my backpack!
We ran to the cashier’s desk, where nothing had been handed in. Now a slight panic set in. We decided to do the only thing that made sense to us. We stood together and prayed. And there suddenly came a call from the cashier’s desk, “Wait here a moment, I just heard from Lost&Found that something was turned in by a woman.” We eagerly awaited the return of the cashier and sure enough, she triumphantly held my backpack in her hands.Of course, I wanted to reward her with a tip and so I reached over to where my wallet always is – EMPTY! No more money, no more credit cards, no more driver’s license, no more insurance cards.
But while I was still searching and then said to the cashier that this key piece, the wallet was missing, a young fellow came running up to me from a distance and shouted, “No, no, the wallet is not gone – here it is” and waved my wallet in the air. He thrust the wallet into my hand. I thanked him and wanted to give him a finder’s fee, which he vehemently refused with a blushing face.
He left. I examined my wallet and saw that everything was there. All the cards and even all the cash were in the wallet. The cashier looked at me and said, “That was the thief who got a guilty conscience and returned your wallet to you with all the money, because the backpack was found open in a corner!”
The thief had become the deliverer of the money for me!
