The Volunteer: Part 2

Story

After about 30 minutes, a doctor called out her name and I went with her to the exam room. In the room, they took some patient history info, and it turned out that she had 3 children. She had had pain and feeling of a lump in her breast for the past 6 months. She recently had a skin reaction and the doctor advised her not to eat tomatoes and spicy food. Oh, and her older half-sister was also diagnosed with breast cancer a few years back

Then the doctor said she should take her clothes off and lie on the bed. Mrs. K asked “Can my husband come in the room?”. The doctor had no problem. When the husband came in the room, Mrs. K shily asked me to turn around and from then on I kept translating while looking at my phone. The doctor told me to inform her about the procedure, when they were applying antiseptics or anesthesia, and using the sampler gun that made quite a loud noise.

While the husband was sitting next to me and completely observing the procedure, I told him not to worry and “Inshallah” there wasn’t a problem. To which he replied “I know, but you know women, they worry too much”.

After it was done and Mrs. K was getting dressed the doctor started talking to me.

– So it’s done and we will have the results in a week. We will give you another appointment for next week. And while it’s not final, you should know that it looks malignant.

– Oh… But you’re not sure.

– No, we will be sure next week. ‌But it looks like cancer.

– Do I have to tell them now?

– You don’t have to, but It will make our job easier for next week and we will have a soft landing.

– Yeah, but It’s not easy news to deliver.

– I know but it doesn’t change the fact that you will do it.

– Yes, but maybe I’m not here next week. Because I’m a volunteer.

– Oh, I thought you were their friend.

– No, I just met them today.

– Well, in that case I find it simpler to tell them it may need further treatment.

– That’s more doable.

And I told them that. And they weren’t really concerned about it. When I got back home, I sent an email to the agency with my report that everything went well and told them I couldn’t make it to the next appointment because it conflicted with my gym schedule. Which was also true.
