Story

She said, “About 38 years ago, that graveyard was abandoned. People said that there was a sudden and mysterious death of Pastor inside Church during a memorial service. No one knows what happened, the case was closed and they had to shut it down after that. Nobody goes there, or talks about it now. But, I heard that there were some weird things going on, like paranormal activities these few recent years. At one point of time, it became a hot talk around town.”

I was shocked to hear that. “Then why would someone go there so late, mom?” I asked.

She was speechless. After a pause of 5 minutes, she replied, “Do not follow that person. Do not go into the woods no matter how much you feel like it. Try to return home as early as possible, dear.” Then she rushed into her room.

The next morning, I went to church with my family. My mother was still in shock. I had never seen her like that before. After the prayer was over, my mother went to the priest, and she shared the conversation we had the previous day. The priest was shocked as well. He repeated the same words as my mother: to never follow that person or go near the forest and graveyard. As a writer, I felt there was a story and I began to gain more interest. I had to know it. I thought of following the woman the next time I saw her. The next day, I was occupied with thoughts of that day.

Then one of my colleagues approached me, “Are you okay? You seem a little spaced out.”

I replied with a heavy breath, “Yes, I am.”

She then responded with a big smile, “You can always count on me, yeah. I can help you if anything is bothering you or if you want a raise,” and she laughed and left.

During the break, I approached her. “Hey, can I have a word with you?” She gave me a sarcastic answer, “No, I am so busy doing nothing,” then she laughed again. I laughed with her. For a moment, we were just laughing, looking at each other.

Then I asked her, “Do you know anything about the old graveyard?” She raised her eyebrows and became serious. Then she replied, “Why would you be interested in a graveyard? Do you want a job there?” She laughed again but then she added, “It’s better if you stayed away from there.” Then we returned to our daily lives.
