Story

She continued, “The mayor”. I got chills. “Yes, the mayor, who was married and had three children. But as per my mother, it was not her fault because she was tricked by that mayor. He was into her beauty. But she wasn’t after his designation and money, it was a true love from her side. Time passed by, and the affair was revealed like a storm. A silent but vicious storm. The storm that turned our beautiful town into a chaos. People started talking about her more than ever. And the person who was most affected by this was the mayor’s wife. She was a very nice lady, but after what happened, she completely changed into a new person. There was a cold war between them, and our happy town turned into a nightmare. Every day we could hear the yelling, screaming, and fighting from the Mayor’s office. And the maid, whenever she showed up, would appear with bruises and wounds. She used to come here and cry a lot. She was devastated. And one day, the worst happened. The town got the news that the maid passed away. They say she went into that forest and took her own life. The townsfolk created a bad image of Janet in their minds and indeed they were relieved that she was dead. The Mayor refused to have any kind of relationship with Janet after all. After that even Mayor, his wife and children fled and vanished from our town. They got away in a thin air.”

I felt very bad for Janet. I had never seen her, met her but it was no fair for her. I wanted to do something for her. I deep down, I could have never imagined that she took her own life. I had to find out and there we were, going to her death anniversary next day.

The next day, I joined the memorial service, and little did I expect, very few people showed up. In counting, there were seven, including me. These were the only people who were close to her and knew the real Janet. I had lots of questions, but I didn’t want to bother them. So I tried to approach more people at the service. There was Marilyn (the babysitter’s daughter) whom I didn’t wanted to bother again, four other women who refused to talk, a guy named Josh. So, finally Josh and I decided to have a small meeting. The next day, I went to see Josh as planned, but he didn’t show up. I didn’t have any contact info or even his address. So I nearly gave up on him. With a little luck and an incomplete story, I had to go back to Marilyn. Little did I know, my luck had turned bad; she was out of town for weeks. With no further leads, I got back to my usual job.
