For the uninitiated reader, this story might require a brief introduction.
Late last summer in Valletta, Malta. Family vacation. Strolling through the historical city. Out of the blue, at the entrance of the National Museum of Archaeology, a fearsome T-Rex stared at us from a poster promoting a special exhibition. Later that evening, on the patio of our hotel room, we were musing about the day, the universe and the coconut trees nearby, concluding that life is good.
My daughter, overhearing our conversation about the day and the dinosaur poster through the open patio door while preparing for bed, stuck her head out the door and mimicked a dinosaur.
This inspired me to write this short story:
To be or Wannabe
Evolution is a successful story
And every single stage was a moment of glory
Every creature in the history had its specific role
At the end it was us, Homo Sapiens, standing tall
The opposable thumb it was that separated us from the others
Only primates and the great apes became our brothers
But may it be ape or duck or wallaby
They all are what they are, else we would call âwannabe’
There is not much choice, a fish always is a fish
Even if we call it, after cooking, a dish
Here we separate from our simpler-minded family
And itâs got to do with the verb âto beâ
We overcame this constraint and learned to be what we feel to be
With that we redefined the meaning of being free
If being a Homo Sapiens is sometimes becoming a bore
We can switch to be whatever we want, and might it be a dinosaur
