You Reap What You Sow

Story

Henry’s face was plastered on posters and news articles all around the country, alongside Jane’s of course. The filming was complete, and he had been busy showing up to interviews and meeting fans. Many of which would call out to him on the street and run up for a signature. He was already working on obtaining his next role, driven by his strong sense of accomplishment. He saw Jane every now and again for the first couple of weeks, but that was nearly a month ago. On their last day on set they had parted ways with a tension between them. However, they ended up that way, it shouldn’t have surprised Henry as much as it did. Of course, he was foolish thinking that Jane had been honest that night. That she could have somehow opened up to him to some degree, nor that she could have changed at all.

For just one evening he felt he could understand her; that she and himself were similar in more ways than he had previously thought. Alas, he felt let down. But the feeling of betrayal that was starting to fester within still tugged at him from time to time. Henry didn’t like to consider himself as someone who grows easily attached, so why was it bothering him?

Jane was quickly back to her old ways, pretending that nothing had happened between Henry and herself. She no longer felt like a boiling pot ready to overflow – she lacked the energy for it. But she kept to herself, only speaking to and smiling with Henry when there were people and cameras involved. In truth, it hurt her. She thought she had found someone who was willing to listen to her and overlook her faults. But their lovely hours upon hours of conversations and laughs turned into a fight by the end of the night. Jane ended up leaving Henry standing in his spot as she made her way back on her own. In hindsight, it must’ve seemed very personal, but really it was the familiar choked-up feeling creeping up her throat that made her want to leave.

She felt sorry for Henry, he hadn’t done nor said anything wrong, and he deserved an apology if not an explanation. Unfortunately, when Jane tried speaking to him the following morning to offer her regrets, he wasn’t to be found. He had left early. Sure it would seem a bit ridiculous to think it was because of her, but at the time she felt guilty and responsible. Worse, she couldn’t fault him for being upset. She completely turned on him over a mere simple and completely justified question.

Somehow, she felt, Jane could only come up with more and more ways of embarrassing herself and pushing people away. She felt awful for it – with Henry there was understanding and what felt like the start of a wondrous friendship. It weighed heavily on her heart. So she figured she should let him move on from it, as well as herself. She would stick to herself and focus on the future, a future in which she didn’t become a burden on the people around her.
